What is a 'Green' Burial?
According to the Green Burial Council, a green or natural burial is a way of honouring loved ones through practices that aid in the conservation of natural spaces and natural resources, whilst avoiding occupational and environmental health issues associated with more common types of burial practices. (Green Burial Council, 2018)
Have Green Burials been examined in Haliburton County?
In 2018, students from Trent University's School of the Environment conducted research on the topic of Green cemeteries as commissioned by the Municipality of Highlands East. The report identifies a host of positive social, environmental, and economic benefits for families seeking to honour their loved ones. Among the report recommendations, the students identified the need for greater community awareness, such as a popular education series on Green Burials.

Has there been local coverage of the issue?
The Haliburton Echo's Sue Tiffin, published an article on the research project on May 15, 2018 titled "Growing Interest in Green Burials".
“To me, it just makes sense,” said Deputy Mayor Suzanne Partridge, who chairs the environment committee. “It’s just a natural way to do things.”
Tiffin also interviewed, Mark Richardson, Manager of Cemetery Services for Niagara Falls- a leading advocate of the green burial movement, and the Ontario Director for the Green Burial Society of Canada. “It’s really a misconception that a green burial is something entirely different – it isn’t,” he said. “We need to get over the stigma that green burials are different. A green burial is a beautiful process to recognize the last wishes of our loved one, and ensure they leave earth in a better condition than when we first got here.”
