the importance of Keeping our night skies dark

Picture

what is light pollution?

Light pollution is the excessive or misdirected artificial light created by streetlights, buildings, and other human activities, which brightens the natural night sky.

Light pollution can disrupt human circadian rhythms, contributing to
sleep problems. It also diminishes our ability to enjoy natural nightscapes, reducing opportunities for stargazing
and impacting cultural and recreational activities.

how does it affect wildlife?

Unnatural light can harm wildlife by disrupting natural behaviors like
migration, feeding, and reproduction.

Migratory birds can become
disoriented, pollinators like bees and moths may struggle to find food or
mates, sea turtles can be drawn away from the ocean, and mammals,
including humans, can experience sleep disruptions and other health problems.

what can I do to help?

Reducing light pollution is easier than you might think! We can all help keep our night skies dark and beautiful by using outdoor lights only when needed, pointing them downward, and choosing warmer, dimmer bulbs.

Businesses and communities can join in by using shielded lighting and encouraging responsible outdoor lighting.

Every small change adds up to help wildlife, improve our sleep and health, and keep the stars shining bright for everyone to enjoy.
