"Climate change is already harming Canadians’ health, causing increases in extreme weather events, cases of heat stroke, cardiorespiratory issues, and Lyme disease from ticks that can now survive in our warmer climate. We need to take action now."

This month, in a collaborative event with Seniors for Climate Action Now! and Climate Action Muskoka, EH! will host
                Jack Gibbons
                         from
      The Ontario Clean Air Alliance
.

Under the Ford government plans, gas plants will be used to replace aging nuclear reactors and meet new demands for electricity from electric vehicles and home heating. But this will result in soaring greenhouse gas emissions at a time when we should be doing everything we can to combat climate change. Gibbons will lay out an alternative plan for getting Ontario to a zero-carbon electricity grid by 2030.

Those in power continue to only deliver vague and empty promises for far-off dates that are much too late. What we need are not meaningless goals for 2050 or net-zero targets full of loopholes, but concrete and immediate action in-line with science. Our carbon budget is running out. The climate crisis is already here and will only get worse, so if we are to avoid the worst-case scenarios, annual, short-term climate binding targets that factor in justice and equity have to be prioritized by the people in charge. Join the world on Friday, March 19, and demand that our mayors, premiers, and the federal government work together because we are in a climate emergency.

Posing as Canadian

Big Foreign Oil's Capture of Canada's Energy and Climate Policy
with Gordon Laxer

This was a collaborative event with Climate Action Muskoka and Seniors for Climate Action Now! for a presentation by Gordon Laxer, political economist and Professor Emeritus at University of Alberta.
Published by the Council of Canadians and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, Laxer's report entitled:“Posing as Canadian: How Big Foreign Oil Captures Canadian Energy and Climate Policy” reveals how foreign fossil fuel interests influence Canadian governments.
The report can be found here: www.gordonlaxer.com

More about Gordon Laxer and his report, "Posing as Canadian: How Big Foreign Oil Captures Canadian Energy and Climate Policy"...

“People may be surprised and intrigued to learn that all major oil corporations operating in Canada are fully or majority foreign-owned,” says Laxer. “Yet they wave the maple leaf flag, meddle in Canadian politics and perpetually lobby the federal and Alberta governments. In a healthy democracy, the voters, not foreign-influenced corporations, shape the policies enacted in their name.”

The report found that foreign-owned corporations fund about 97 per cent of the revenue of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) - the apex oil and gas lobby group in Canada. A 2018 law bans foreign entities from meddling in Canadian elections. But, if corporations list their headquarters in Canada, they can register as third-party advertisers for elections. Executives of foreign-owned oil corporations have made sizeable contributions to political parties and politicians who favour their agenda. The report recommends closing the loophole.

“Climate impacts now occur across Canada. Oil and gas production is the largest source of carbon pollution here, but still governments drag their feet on policies to transition off fossil fuels. Now we know why,” says CAM co-founder, Sue McKenzie. “Canadians want to be listened to and want a ‘made in Canada’ climate policy, not one influenced by foreign fossil fuel interests.”

Gordon Laxer is a political economist, professor emeritus at the University of Alberta, and the founding Director of Parkland Institute. He is the author of two award-winning books (After the Sands: Energy and Ecological Security for Canadians, and Open for Business: The Roots of Foreign Ownership in Canada) and the editor of several others. He has published over 40 journal articles, refereed book chapters, and research reports. His op-eds have been published widely in Canadian outlets and he has also been a regular guest on current affairs radio and television programs.

We need a:
  • A moratorium on fossil fuel expansion, including stopping construction on existing expansion projects
  • An urgent and robust just transition plan that leaves no one behind and moves us past fossil fuels.

As a result of safety concerns around current government regulations about public gatherings,
the  location of our
Global Climate Action Day event has changed.

It will be held between the town docks and the lights at the Gelert Rd.

There is a maximum of 25 attendees. This will be monitored.

All C-19 protocols will be followed such as:
  1. wearing a mask, with no singing, chanting or shouting.
  2. respecting a distance of 8 feet apart. We will mark a spot for you to stand or sit on a lawn chair and ask that you remain in place (if possible) for the hour's duration to avoid problems with people getting too close to each other.
  3.  Please self- assess before attending.

Please bring a sign, if you can.

If we have to say thank you but sorry we have reached capacity, we will keep track of numbers and be sure to include this in any post media coverage. Please come out and support us as people may also come and go!

Please stay tuned to our social and local media for any pertinent updates.

We also ask that you not participate if you have traveled out of the country, have any symptoms of respiratory infection, or have had any contact with a known or suspected case of COVID. Again, masks are mandatory.
Here is the link for COVID self assessment: https://covid-19.ontario.ca/self-assessment/

Please bring a sign to state why you are participating.
Examples of slogans are:
"No Planet B"
Climate Justice
We want a Green Recovery
Our Children's Future is at Stake
Save our Planet
We are all in this together
Unite behind the Science
Climate Action Now!

Please print your letters as large as possible so they can be read from a distance.

We are recommending you make your sign out of Coroplast or Foam Core if you plan to attend further climate strikes. This material is available at Glecoff's Family Store in Haliburton.

More information can be found at https://fridaysforfuture.org/what-we-do/our-demands/

Why are we protesting?
While provincial, national and international action on the climate emergency is essential, all communities, including Haliburton County, need to pull their weight for us to have a reasonable chance of limiting global warming to less than 2 degrees C, and preferably 1.5 degrees, under the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement. Our current Climate Action Plan does not come close to meeting this agreement. We want action on all political levels that provides a liveable planet for our children.

So, please wear a mask over both nose and mouth, bring  a lawn chair and a sign. We will have hand sanitizer available.
